Baker Level

Baker first appeared in the London Street Directories in 1851 but was self claimed to have been established in the late 1700's.

This level is signed "Baker 244 High Holborn London". He continued on at that address until 1909.

After extensive searches of the internet I cannot find a lot of information but at some stage later in his career he started signing his instruments   " C. Baker".

There are very few references to the manufacture of levels but there were a lot of microscopes made by Baker.

Looking at the makers inscriptions on the microscopes and the various styles of engraving I believe that this level, with the copper plate engraving, would be circa 1900

The instrument was sold by E. Esdaile 54 Hunter Street, Sydney. Esdaile operated at these premises between 1895 to 1920.

This level was donated by John Webber
