Cary London Level

William Cary ( 1759-1825) served an apprenticeship as a scientific instrument maker with Jesse ramsden ( 1735 -1800).

On William's death his nephews, George and John Cary, continued to operate under the business name of  William Cary for many years.

Henry Porter appeared to be the sole proprietor in about 1875 and he moved the business to 7 Pall Mall sometime in the 1890s.

This level would be circa late 1800s.

The level is quite a large and sturdy instrument weighing in with the box at 9.45kg. It is the only instrument that I have seen with a rack and pinion adjustment on the eye piece.
