Troughton & Simms Level - Circa 1830
Dating of this instrument was through the book " Nineteenth Century Scientific Instruments" by Gerard Turner - another exciting moment when I recognised my level in the book and was able to substantiate the age of the level. The box for this level must have been sitting on a shelf for 170 years because it is in relatively mint condition as is the level.
The partnership between Troughton and Simms did not commence until 1826 but the levels were being made at least 9 years before that date and branded with the T & S name from 1826.
The Alfred Jenkins trade label indicated a repair or service in the early 1900s. He was listed at 190 Little Collins Street, Melbourne (1903 - 1923) see "Scientific Instrument Makers and Dealers in Victoria 1840 -1914" by H.C. Bolton and Nicola H. Williams although the trade label list his addresses at 484 Little Bourke Street and 13 Somerset Place in Melbourne
6 years later after the initial posting, I have sourced more information which could date the level from 1826.
The button below to the Cyclopedia by Rees shows an 1817 picture acknowledging Troughton as the maker. The level is the same as in my collection.
