Flavelle Bros and Roberts Theodolite
This is a surveying transit Theodolite made by Flavelle Bros & Roberts. ( Flavelle Bros. & Roberts -John Flavelle, Henry Flavelle and John Roberts).
This company was listed in Queen Street, Brisbane, 340 George Street Sydney, Hatten Garden London and Rue Gaillon Paris.
John Flavelle arrived in Sydney from England in 1844. In 1846 he entered into a partnership with Samuel Brush as Flavelle & Brush, this lasted until
1850 when Brush departed and John's elder brother Henry joined the firm to run the London side of the business now known as Flavelle Bros.
John Roberts, a jeweller, who had worked for the firm since at least 1856 became a full partner in 1869 and the firm's name became Flavelle Bros and Roberts.
Henry Flavelle's death in 1888 occurred just after yet another change of name, this time to Flavelle & Roberts.
In 1892 they became a Limited company, and 1899 saw the death of John Flavelle and in 1900 the firm was called Flavelle Bros. Ltd
I would date this instrument c 1888 - 1892.
I believe that this theodolite is one of only a few that were made in Australia .
Flavelle and Roberts were "the only possessors of a dividing engine in the .comes complete with the original leather case
